Usually, no. Most UK properties are allowed sheds as 'permitted developments' with no planning permission required, provided they are not placed in a front garden or exceed height limits. If you live in a listed property, a conservation area, or are unsure about boundary rules, please read our quick guide to shed planning permission to double-check before ordering.
When we say a 'base', we mean a surface that is:
- Flat (check with a spirit level)
- Solid (bricks, slabs, concrete, or a base kit. NOT soil, grass or loose gravel)
- With drainage (it doesn't have to be raised, but rainwater has to be able to leave the area.)
So yes, all sheds require a base.
It is important that a shed stands in a location where it will be able to easily remain upright without undue stress on the structure, and where it won't be absorbing water. Our wooden sheds all come with pressure treated floor bearers which raise the floor slightly above the ground, so you can place yours straight onto a level patio or reinforced decking without issue.

Choosing the Right Shed Size
Shed sizes are quoted width × depth. Bear in mind that the stated size refers to the external frame, not the internal floor space. As a general guide:
- 6×4 and small sheds: Ideal for garden tools, a lawnmower, and a few bags of compost. A practical choice for smaller gardens where footprint matters. See our small garden sheds.
- 6×6 and 7×5: The most popular starter size. Comfortably fits a lawnmower, garden furniture in winter storage, tools, and a workbench along one wall.

Wooden Shed Cladding: What's the Difference?
The cladding is the outer skin of a wooden shed — the boards that keep out the weather. The three main types differ in price, appearance, and how well they hold up over time:
- Overlap cladding (7mm) is our most affordable option and the entry point for budget-conscious buyers. Boards are layered horizontally like roof tiles, which sheds water effectively. It can develop small gaps over time as the wood moves, but regular treatment keeps it in good condition.
