A log cabin (or garden cabin) is a garden building made from thick, solid timber — the logs interlock at the corners to form the walls themselves, rather than being clad over a frame. With insulated models letting you use them all year round, a cabin can add an extra dimension to your home. Do You Need Planning Permission for a Log Cabin?
Our log cabins fall under 'permitted development' and won't normally need planning permission, as long as they:
Are single-storey
Aren't intended for permanent residential use
Have a maximum eaves height of 2.5m
Don't exceed 4m overall (dual-pitched roof, e.g. apex or reverse apex) or 3m (any other roof, e.g. pent) — when sited more than 2m from a boundary
Don't exceed 2.5m overall if any part is within 2m of a boundary
Don't cover more than 50% of your garden
Aren't built forward of the front wall of your house
Because every BillyOh log cabin comes in under 2.5m total height, it stays within the height limit wherever you place it — even right up against a fence or boundary (just don't raise the base so high that it tips the total over 2.5m). Log Cabin Insulation for a Comfortable Garden Room
Our thicker log cabins already offer a good level of thermal insulation from the outset. A 44mm cabin, for example, uses the timber’s natural heat-retaining qualities to keep it comfortable inside for more of the year, giving you a comfortable garden room without any extra work.
Some owners choose to add their own insulation as a DIY project. It's a common modification, but it's not something we can recommend: altering the structure this way voids your guarantee, and the results vary widely depending on how it's done. If you want a fully insulated cabin, the reliable route is to choose one built for it from the start.

How Much is a Log Cabin?
The cost of a garden log cabin depends on a number of variables. The size of the building, the thickness of the logs, the features it has and the need for any extras all affect the cost. A small model starts at around just over £1,000, with cabin sheds slightly cheaper, while larger and pre-insulated cabins range up to and beyond £5,000.
