Each building uses robust log-lap cladding with tongue and groove connectors, creating a robust external structure despite the large size of the building. What is a Log Cabin?
A log cabin (or garden cabin) is a garden building made from thick, solid timber — the logs interlock at the corners to form the walls themselves, rather than being clad over a frame. They're robust buildings that add extra living space and functionality to your home, with multipurpose designs that suit a range of uses.
Log cabins come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of features to choose from. They make ideal home offices, studios and workshops — but are equally good as a place to unwind. With insulated models letting you use them all year round, a cabin can add an extra dimension to your home. Alongside traditional log cabins, this range also includes our panel-built insulated garden rooms — engineered for proper year-round use.
Do You Need Planning Permission for a Log Cabin?
Our log cabins fall under 'permitted development' and won't normally need planning permission, as long as they:
- Are single-storey
- Aren't intended for permanent residential use
- Have a maximum eaves height of 2.5m
- Don't exceed 4m overall (dual-pitched roof, e.g. apex or reverse apex) or 3m (any other roof, e.g. pent) — when sited more than 2m from a boundary
- Don't exceed 2.5m overall if any part is within 2m of a boundary
- Don't cover more than 50% of your garden
- Aren't built forward of the front wall of your house
Every product page lists the building's ridge height, so check it against the limits above for the spot you have in mind. Bear in mind the base counts towards total height, so a raised base can tip a building over the threshold. Log Cabin Insulation for a Comfortable Garden Room
Our thicker log cabins already offer a good level of thermal insulation from the outset. A 44mm cabin, for example, uses the timber’s natural heat-retaining qualities to keep it comfortable inside for more of the year, giving you a comfortable garden room without any extra work.
Some owners choose to add their own insulation as a DIY project. It's a common modification, but it's not something we can recommend: altering the structure this way voids your guarantee, and the results vary widely depending on how it's done. If you want a fully insulated cabin, the reliable route is to choose one built for it from the start.

How Much is a Log Cabin?
The cost of a garden log cabin depends on a number of variables. The size of the building, the thickness of the logs, the features it has and the need for any extras all affect the cost. Small cabins sit at the affordable end of the range, with log cabin sheds cheaper still, while larger models and pre-insulated garden rooms sit at the top. Extra costs to expect would be the need to prepare a base, annual treatment as part of its routine maintenance, and any furniture you wish to add.

At ~12m² (13x10ft) it's a proper garden room — big enough for a dual-purpose office and relaxation space, a well-equipped gym, or a hobby studio, with room for real furniture rather than just the essentials.
Yes — at this size many people zone it (a working area plus a seating or storage area), or add their own partition once it's built. Some models also come in multi-room layouts, so check the individual product for interior options.
It's weatherproof throughout the year, but genuine winter warmth depends on wall thickness — a thicker (44mm) cabin holds heat better, and for a true year-round room our insulated garden rooms are the right choice. We don't recommend retrofitting your own insulation, as it voids the guarantee.
What Can You Use a 4x3 Log Cabin For?
As one of our largest cabin sizes, 4m x 3m cabin models can be used for just about anything. Their spacious interiors can be tailored for a massive range of uses and can comfortably fit up to 4 people inside at one time. This means you can use it as an entertaining or dining room - or as a salon or studio for a side business.
The space on offer with our cabins of this size also means that you’re not limited to one kind of use. There’s enough room to store furnishings or items for a second use - so it can be your workspace during the day and a private gym in the evenings!
While these sizes are big, they’re not overly expansive and the interior still has a touch of cosiness - which is only enhanced by the look and feel of the timber walls.
Can a 4x3m Cabin Be Too Big?
It can be too big for a couple of reasons - either you don’t have a large enough garden to accommodate the cabin, or the interior is too big for your intended use.
Planning laws state that a garden building cannot take up more than 50% of the total space of your garden, though we recommend that any of our new buildings don’t take up any more than 30%. If it’s any bigger than this, you may find that your garden looks and feels too cramped and you may be restricted with how you can use it. Cabins are not easy to remove once they’re in place, so we recommend accurately measuring the area of your garden and working out how much space you’ll be left with once the building is installed.
The other more uncommon way it may be too big is if the interior is too large for what you need it for. Perhaps you only want a cosy nook to read in, or a small office to start your business venture from. If that’s the case, opt for a slightly smaller model as that will perform your intended use with better space efficiency.
Is 4x3m A Suitable Size For a Home Office?
Yes, these are well-sized for offices or workspaces and can even accommodate more than one person at a time. If you’re starting your own business and need a central spot to coordinate from, or if you’ve embraced remote working or the life of a digital nomad, a building of this size allows you to separate your work and home environments. Our Kent cabin has been specially designed for use as a home office and has an interior that offers enough room for two desks as well as shelves, filing cabinets, or even a small meeting table.
