What is a Log Cabin?
A log cabin (or garden cabin) is a garden building made from thick, solid timber — the logs interlock at the corners to form the walls themselves, rather than being clad over a frame. They're robust buildings that add extra living space and functionality to your home, with multipurpose designs that suit a range of uses.
Log cabins come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of features to choose from. They make ideal home offices, studios and workshops — but are equally good as a place to unwind. With insulated models letting you use them all year round, a cabin can add an extra dimension to your home. Alongside traditional log cabins, this range also includes our panel-built insulated garden rooms — engineered for proper year-round use.
Do You Need Planning Permission for a Log Cabin?
Our log cabins fall under 'permitted development' and won't normally need planning permission, as long as they:
- Are single-storey
- Aren't intended for permanent residential use
- Have a maximum eaves height of 2.5m
- Don't exceed 4m overall (dual-pitched roof, e.g. apex or reverse apex) or 3m (any other roof, e.g. pent) — when sited more than 2m from a boundary
- Don't exceed 2.5m overall if any part is within 2m of a boundary
- Don't cover more than 50% of your garden
- Aren't built forward of the front wall of your house
Every product page lists the building's ridge height, so check it against the limits above for the spot you have in mind. Bear in mind the base counts towards total height, so a raised base can tip a building over the threshold. Log Cabin Insulation for a Comfortable Garden Room
Our thicker log cabins already offer a good level of thermal insulation from the outset. A 44mm cabin, for example, uses the timber’s natural heat-retaining qualities to keep it comfortable inside for more of the year, giving you a comfortable garden room without any extra work.
Some owners choose to add their own insulation as a DIY project. It's a common modification, but it's not something we can recommend: altering the structure this way voids your guarantee, and the results vary widely depending on how it's done. If you want a fully insulated cabin, the reliable route is to choose one built for it from the start.

How Much is a Log Cabin?
The cost of a garden log cabin depends on a number of variables. The size of the building, the thickness of the logs, the features it has and the need for any extras all affect the cost. Small cabins sit at the affordable end of the range, with log cabin sheds cheaper still, while larger models and pre-insulated garden rooms sit at the top. Extra costs to expect would be the need to prepare a base, annual treatment as part of its routine maintenance, and any furniture you wish to add.
FAQs
This is one of our largest footprints (~20m² / 16x14ft) — a substantial garden room that can take a multi-room layout: an office plus a meeting or relaxation space, a large gym, or a studio with a separate store. Enough room to design it around how you'll actually use it.
There's no floor-area limit under permitted development, so even at ~20m² the size only matters via the 50% rule (all outbuildings must take up less than half your garden). It still needs to sit behind the front of the house and within the height limits (2.5m within 2m of a boundary). Aside from listed/conservation homes, most properties won't need permission — see our planning guide. Building regulations are a separate question.
At around 20m² it falls in the 15–30m² band where building regs can apply depending on how close it is to a boundary and whether it's built of or lined with combustible materials — and always if anyone sleeps in it. For a standard garden office or studio it often won't, but confirm before you build (rules differ across the UK).
What Size Gardens Can a 5x4 Cabin Fit In?
With these large log cabin models, it is especially important you are sure your garden can fit the building. Being so large, it’s easy for them to create a cramped effect on your garden and leave you feeling short on space.
UK planning permission laws require any garden buildings to take up less than 50% of the original outdoor space around your home. We recommend that your new cabin only take up no more than 30% of the existing space to avoid restricting the use of your garden or leaving it feeling too cramped. Measure your space accurately and work out how much space it will take up before you buy.
What Are the Best Uses for a 5x4 Log Cabin?
The best uses for these big cabins are ones that make the best use of the large space on offer. Applications that take up lots of room are easily and efficiently accommodated in these buildings, like a large entertaining room for socialising or relaxing, a versatile workspace for two or more people, or something more practical like a workshop or art studio.
If you just want a small, cosy space to relax in, the large footprint of this cabin won’t be well-suited as you may end up with a large amount of the interior unused. Instead, if you want a cosy space but need a cabin of this size, why not combine it with a different type of use? Devote half the cabin to your nook, and use the other as a mini-gym or even a functional storage space to take the load off your attic.
