What is a Log Cabin?
A log cabin (or garden cabin) is a garden building made from thick, solid timber — the logs interlock at the corners to form the walls themselves, rather than being clad over a frame. They're robust buildings that add extra living space and functionality to your home, with multipurpose designs that suit a range of uses.
Log cabins come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of features to choose from. They make ideal home offices, studios and workshops — but are equally good as a place to unwind. With insulated models letting you use them all year round, a cabin can add an extra dimension to your home. Alongside traditional log cabins, this range also includes our panel-built insulated garden rooms — engineered for proper year-round use.
Do You Need Planning Permission for a Log Cabin?
Our log cabins fall under 'permitted development' and won't normally need planning permission, as long as they:
- Are single-storey
- Aren't intended for permanent residential use
- Have a maximum eaves height of 2.5m
- Don't exceed 4m overall (dual-pitched roof, e.g. apex or reverse apex) or 3m (any other roof, e.g. pent) — when sited more than 2m from a boundary
- Don't exceed 2.5m overall if any part is within 2m of a boundary
- Don't cover more than 50% of your garden
- Aren't built forward of the front wall of your house
Every product page lists the building's ridge height, so check it against the limits above for the spot you have in mind. Bear in mind the base counts towards total height, so a raised base can tip a building over the threshold. Log Cabin Insulation for a Comfortable Garden Room
Our thicker log cabins already offer a good level of thermal insulation from the outset. A 44mm cabin, for example, uses the timber’s natural heat-retaining qualities to keep it comfortable inside for more of the year, giving you a comfortable garden room without any extra work.
Some owners choose to add their own insulation as a DIY project. It's a common modification, but it's not something we can recommend: altering the structure this way voids your guarantee, and the results vary widely depending on how it's done. If you want a fully insulated cabin, the reliable route is to choose one built for it from the start.

How Much is a Log Cabin?
The cost of a garden log cabin depends on a number of variables. The size of the building, the thickness of the logs, the features it has and the need for any extras all affect the cost. Small cabins sit at the affordable end of the range, with log cabin sheds cheaper still, while larger models and pre-insulated garden rooms sit at the top. Yes — a firm, fully level base across the whole footprint (concrete, paving or an eco grid base). The larger the cabin, the more a solid, level base matters to keep the walls square and the doors working.

What Uses Are 12x8 Log Cabins Suitable For?
Our cabins of this size are classed as medium size, which means they can accommodate a range of uses and should be able to accommodate multipurpose functionality.
The interior space is roomy without being too large, so it can still feel cosy if you add enough furnishings. It can easily accommodate two people at once, and up to four before it begins to feel cramped. Any gatherings larger than this are likely to feel closed-in, so we wouldn’t recommend using buildings of this size for purely social or entertainment purposes.
Uses that this size is great for is anything where one to two people are in the building, such as a studio, garden office or workspace, a garden gym, or a place to relax like an extra living room. There should be enough space for multifunctional use, for example a building that is usually an office but, when the furniture is pushed to the side, can be used as a handy gym.
Make sure that this size aligns with your intended use(s) before choosing it.
What Size Garden Will a 12x8 Cabin Fit In?
It is important that you size your garden correctly before choosing your cabin size. A cabin that is too big for your garden may leave you feeling unhappy with both the building and the garden you have left - avoid this by measuring it out accurately beforehand and surveying the space you want to install the cabin in.
As per planning permission law, your garden building can’t take up more than 50% of the available space in your garden. However, we’d recommend that it doesn’t take up any more than 35% of your garden. Any larger, and you’re likely to be left with a building that dominates the space and restricts how you can use it. Calculating this will give you a good idea of whether or not your garden will feel too small after the cabin has been built.
Can Your Cabins Be Self-Assembled?
Yes, in fact, they’re designed specifically to be self-assembled! All buildings come with a details digital assembly manual that you’ll receive before the building itself arrives. Like a more advanced set of flat-packed furniture, simply follow the instructions through to build your new Log Cabin. You will need the help of another person (for a team of two) to help you build it.
