FAQs
Dip treatment is a surface-level protection that lasts approximately one year from manufacture. Pressure treatment offers protection that lasts up to 15 years before additional protection is required.
To keep your 15-year anti-rot guarantee valid, your log cabin must be built on a firm, 100% level base. We highly recommend a concrete pad, paving slabs, or a base kit. A level base prevents structural damage. The cabin should also be positioned with at least 24 inches of space around all four sides; this provides airflow to keep the wood dry, and gives you access should any maintenance be required.
Yes. In fact, we encourage our customers to paint and decorate their log cabins after installation. Unpainted, a pressure treated log cabin will carry a green tint for a long time. Paint will only be needed for cosmetic purposes.
But you just need to wait for the treatment to dry before you apply paint. This will take approximately 4 months after delivery (up to 6 months if the season is cold/wet).
Painting before the treatment has dried can cause moisture to become trapped inside the timber and leads to mould that will inevitably rise to the surface and show through the paint as blotches.
No. While pressure treatment provides industry-leading protection against rot, decay, and insect infestation, it is not a waterproofing seal.
Wood is a natural, living material that 'breathes.' Even when treated, it can absorb moisture or develop small, natural settlements as the timber seasons and adjusts to your garden's climate. This is not a problem as long as you provide your cabin with good airflow and a solid base. If you require waterproofing, you can optionally apply a water-repellent treatment or exterior paint after assembly.
With pressure treatment, you don't need to apply annual treatment to keep your log cabin protected. Depending on the size, an untreated cabin could require between 4 and 10 litres of preservative, with a new coat to be applied each year. That starts from approximately £43 yearly, but can be as high as £80 for 10 litres of a quality stain. Over 5 years, that's up to £400 just on the material.
You should also consider the value of your time, as re-coating a log cabin can be a 3-4 hour job that takes up one of your precious days off in good weather.
So with those considerations in mind, the upgrade to pressure treatment (starting from around £250) can easily work out financially cheaper over the course of years. But you might also consider it excellent value for saving you all those irreplaceable hours of painting.
What Are the Advantages of Pressure Treated Wood?
Pressure-treating our European-sourced timber creates wood that is water and weather-resistant and requires far less maintenance.
The process is simple. The cabin timber is sealed in a special pressure-treatment tank, where the pressurised environment forces chemical preservatives into the makeup of the wood.
Introducing the preservatives to the wood in this environment allows the chemicals to penetrate deep into the timber, unlike dip-treatments that are only surface level and will require regular maintenance (and associated costs) over the years. Additionally, the wood stain offered by pressure-treating offers a traditional, alpine aesthetic.
The result is timber that can withstand water better thanks to its chemical preservatives and therefore needs less maintenance. One added benefit that we provide is that any pressure-treated building comes with an extended 15-year guarantee.
You should choose a pressure-treated cabin if you need a building that can withstand harsh weather better or if you want to invest in better longevity for your cabin of choice.
Pressure treatment increases the cost of the building as there are added costs of treating the wood, but this is less expensive and (much less) time-intensive than the process of regularly treating your cabin. The upfront cost of treatment is an investment in helping it last longer.
Of course, we also provide an extended 15-year guarantee on any pressure-treated building. Opting for pressure treatment can give you peace of mind that your building will add value and usability to your home for a decade and a half.
Do You Offer a Guarantee?
Yes, every single pressure-treated BillyOh log cabin comes with a 15-year protective guarantee. Our standard guarantee is only 10 years but, to reflect the confidence we have in the longevity of our pressure-treated wood, any treated model will have an extended 15-year guarantee.
The guarantee protects against the primary forms of wood damage: rot, decay and insect infestation.
Does Pressure Treatment Change the Colour of the Wood?
Yes, it does, and for many this is a positive change.
At first, the timber will have a slightly green hue - this is simply due to the freshness of the treatment. Over time as the wood ages and the chemicals settle into the material this will age into a beautiful warm brown colour that is similar to the look of traditional alpine cabins.
See how our satisfied customers created the perfect space using their BillyOh building.
