FAQs
Usually, no. Most UK properties are allowed sheds as 'permitted developments' with no planning permission required.
Exceptions (where you MIGHT need planning permission) include:
- Listed properties and locations of 'outstanding natural beauty'
- Structures exceeding 2.5 metres height on the eaves or, if placed near a boundary, 2.5 metres total height (our sheds don't exceed this)
- Sheds placed in the front garden
- Sheds exceeding more than 50% of the garden space
There are some other rules, so check out our guide to planning permission for sheds to get a full understanding.
Some maintenance is required for wooden sheds, and our guarantee is dependent upon the building having been correctly looked after.
Fortunately, the process is simple. Here are the main things you need to do:
- Build the shed at least 2 feet away from a fence, wall, or trees. This ensures access for maintenance, and helps with airflow so the shed can stay dry.
- Particularly with log cabin sheds, give it a few months for the wood to settle before you attach anything across multiple sections, as there could be some shifting, expansion and contraction.
- Periodically check for gaps or cracks, and apply a sealant if necessary to prevent rain penetration.
- Paint or stain your shed to protect the wood from moisture (aka treating the timber). This should be done only after assembly and should be topped up annually.
The requirement to treat the timber does not apply to pressure treated sheds as they are already protected and have a longer 15-year guarantee.
Our sheds are guaranteed for 10 years against rot, decay and insect infestation. With proper care and maintenance, a high-quality wooden shed can last for 15-20 years. We recommend these maintenance techniques to get the most out of your shed:
- Build it in a position that leaves at least 24 inches of space around all four sides. This provides maintenance access as well as airflow, so the timber can dry properly after rainfall.
- On its floor bearers, keep the shed on a base: a flat, solid, level surface in an area where water will not pool.
- Apply a coat of wood preservative treatment every year, including as soon as possible after installation.
- Routinely inspect the roof to ensure the felt maintains integrity and no gaps have formed. Patch or seal any gaps that may emerge.
- Allow for some expansion and contraction of the timber with temperature and humidity changes. Use temporary sealant or patches on any gaps to prevent water ingress.

We don't offer an installation service, but our wooden sheds are designed to be easy to put together with some basic DIY skills and one other helper. As the modular wall panels are already pre-assembled, much of the hard work has already been done.

Our wooden sheds always come under the height limits for UK planning permission. However, there are some other rules to follow.
Some properties always need planning permission for outbuildings depending on their area (Areas of Outstanding National Beauty, listed buildings, among others), so check with your local council first.
Otherwise, your shed will be a permitted development so long as you:
- Don't put it in the front garden
- Don't leave more than half your outdoor space built upon
- Don't try to live in it or use it as overnight accommodation
Planning permission may apply if you use it for business operations.
