Fir is ideal for building planters because of its inherent durability. With minimal maintenance compared to other wood types, fir can be left outdoors and still look great for between 10 to 20 years.
It’s a good idea to line the inside of your wooden planter to keep the compost moist. This also reduces the frequency with which you need to water your plants, as the water is retained.
Many materials can be used as liners. Recycle old plastic bags, newspapers, and compost bags to use. So long as water can drain out (you might need to create small holes), any of these options can work!
No, the Iris Planter is designed with integrated drainage holes to ensure your plants have the best environment to grow.
To prepare your planter, ensure that it has holes in the bottom for drainage. If not, you can drill your own holes. Line your planter and use soil labelled “potting soil” to guarantee it’s the right density. After that, you’re ready to add your plants!

Care
Our planters are crafted from fir wood, a highly durable and hardwearing material perfect for outdoor use. It's naturally resistant to insects and mould and won't warp out of shape in different weather conditions.
Most importantly, it isn't affected by water, making it ideal for the rainy British weather. Because of this, it has longevity that other outdoor planters may not possess.
We've also ensured our planters have drainage holes in the bottom, so any water that doesn't soak into the soil can drain effectively. This allows the roots to get plenty of air to help your plants grow.
Plus, we've coated the garden planter in a 'heartwood' colour stain to add an extra layer of protection to the fir wood.
We encourage you to line the wood planter before adding the soil. Be sure that there are holes in the lining to allow the drainage holes to do their job.
