At Garden Buildings Direct, our smallest models start as 4 x 8 summerhouses - perfect to fit smaller gardens for those who still want a little snug. Our 10 x 8 summerhouses represent some of our larger models - ideal for those who want to have a fully functioning space at the bottom of their garden, whether it be for a home office or guest room.

A summerhouse can be used for a relaxing retreat at the end of the garden that can serve many purposes including:

  • Home gym - A weight rack, exercise matts, and yoga ball would fit perfectly.
  • A relaxation room - Soft furnishings like throws, blankets, and even rattan furniture.
  • A home cinema - Projector, beans bags, and maybe even a small popcorn machine.
  • For entertaining - Consider including a wooden table and chairs with space to serve prosecco and cream teas.
  • A home office - A good desk, ergonomic chair, and install utilities to your garden building.

As long as you’re not planning to use your summer house as a permanent residence then it should fall under ‘permitted development’, meaning that you shouldn’t require planning permission. This is also on the basis that your 10 x 8 summerhouse is:

  • Not built further forward than the front wall of your house.
  • Single storey.
  • Built with a max eaves height no greater than 2.5m (with an overall height of 4m for a dual-pitched roof).
  • Not larger than 50% of your garden.

These rules may vary depending on where you live, however, and it’s always wise to check with your local council first. For more information, check out our quick guide to planning permission.

Unless you’re planning to use your wooden summer house as a permanent residence (like an extension), it shouldn’t need planning permission. This is also provided that it’s a single storey structure built no higher than 4m for a dual pitched roof (with eaves no higher than 2.5m).

At Garden Buildings Direct, all of our 10 x 8 summerhouses (and garden buildings in general) are built with these rules in mind.

A structurally sound base is essential in ensuring your summer house can last as long as possible. Your summer house base should be flat and level, so as to avoid cracking and breaking the timber or putting undue stress on window and door frames which could shatter glass. Your choices vary from a concrete base for your summer house to an ecobase or timber sub-floor. That’s why we offer many of these as add-ons upon purchasing your summer house.
