Yes, absolutely. Like all garden buildings, a metal shed must be built on a firm, 100% level base. Without a flat base, the metal panels will not align properly during assembly, and the doors will not open or close correctly. We highly recommend a solid concrete base or paving slabs. A solid base also allows you to securely anchor the shed to the ground using anchor bolts to protect against high winds. Yes, metal sheds can get hot during the summer. However, this can be mitigated with good ventilation and limited direct sunlight. Our BillyOh metal sheds designed for working in feature vents as standard to help with airflow.
When assembled correctly, a metal shed roof should not leak. All of our BillyOh metal sheds feature apex or pent roofs specifically designed for rapid rainwater runoff, and the roof panels overlap to prevent water ingress. However, water can sometimes seep in from the bottom if the shed is positioned in sitting water. To prevent this, ensure your shed sits on a raised shed base so water drains away from the bottom edges, and apply a bead of silicone sealant around the inside of the base rail once assembled.
Because metal is a highly conductive material, single-skin metal sheds can be prone to condensation during the colder months when the temperature drops outside but remains slightly warmer inside. You can easily combat this by building your shed base with a built-in damp proof membrane (DPM) to stop ground moisture from rising, leaving space around the shed for airflow, and not storing wet items inside. Steel sheds start at a lower price than most wooden sheds and are ideal for storage or use as workshops. They can be longer lasting and lower maintenance but may not be as aesthetically traditional. They can be secured to a concrete base and offer high levels of security.
However, wooden sheds are more insulated, versatile, and customisable.
Most metal buildings need surprisingly little maintenance. This is because the metal exterior materials are generally equipped with a protective coating or layer that keeps the metal protected from environmental effects. This layer can sometimes be an additional sheet of a different material, or a layer of galvanisation.
Thanks to this, the amount of maintenance that’s required to keep these sheds in great condition is greatly reduced. We recommend repainting the exterior every five years to keep it looking its best, but not much else is needed other than a spray-down with a hose when it gets dirty.
Fear of rusting metal puts many people off buying a metal building. But a modern technique and material application mean that the risk of rusting on our metal sheds is now limited.
This is achieved in a couple of ways, the most widespread being a process called galvanisation. During galvanisation, steel or aluminium is dipped into bath of molten zinc to form a protective outer coating. This coating acts as a barrier for water and oxygen, which can’t then reach the steel, therefore preventing it from rusting. The galvanised layer usually lasts upwards of 35 years, giving you decades of rust-free use of your metal unit.
