What Is a Workshop?

A workshop can be whatever you need it to. With wide-opening double doors and windowed or windowless options, though, they lend themselves to being used as storage and a place for DIY projects.

With galvanised ironmongery on our BillyOh workshops, they can also act as a secure home for your expensive garden and power tools. To get the most out of your wooden workshop, consider installing utilities and setting up a workbench in the centre of the longest wall.

Unlike summerhouses and log cabins, shed and workshops are usually intended for practical use rather than relaxation. But that doesn't mean you can still have a stylish log cabin workshop that suits a modern and contemporary garden.

What is the Difference Between a Workshop and a Shed?

The main difference between these two buildings is what they are used for. Whereas a shed is mostly focused on providing protected storage, the main function of a workshop is to give you a place to let your hobby or craft be free. That means the inside of the workshop has to be usable first and foremost. With this in mind, workshops will also generally be larger than sheds to provide enough space for you, your items or equipment, and room to move around.

What’s the Right Size for a Garden Workshop?

Finding the perfect sized workshop for your needs depends on a few factors, including why you need it and the space you have available. But, for a building that offers enough space or storage for your needs, the ideal size for variable uses would be a 16x10 workshop. Of course, this is only a guide - the right size for you may be bigger or smaller than this.

Do You Need Planning Permission For a Workshop?

Garden workshops fall under what's called 'permitted development' and won't require planning permission, so long as they:

  • Are single-storey
  • Don't exceed a max eaves height of 2.5m
  • Don't exceed an overall height of 4m (dual-pitched roof like an apex or -reverse apex) or 3m (any other type of roof, like a pent)
  • Don't take up more than 50% of your garden area
  • Aren't build past the front wall of your house

That's why our wooden workshops for sale are built with these height measurements in mind. For more information, you can always talk to our customer service team.

Our workshops are available in either wood (including log cabin workshops) or metal, with both offering a unique set of advantages.

A wooden workshop maintains a traditional, authentic look which is well suited to compliment almost any type of garden. These can be chosen in a windowed or windowless style, depending on whether you need natural light to work or want to potentially add security.

Metal workshops are a cheaper option, ideal for those looking for a lower maintenance workshop where they can use power tools that may produce sparks..

Metal workshops generally require less treatment and can potentially last longer than their wooden counterparts. The galvanised steel panels which form the core structure of a metal workshop are roll formed with deep ribs for added strength. This provides extensive durability, protection against the worst weather the UK can throw at it and no treatment being required to begin with. However, a wooden workshop is a heavy-duty option and built-to-last. That’s why our BillyOh workshops come with a 10-year anti-rot, decay and insect infestation guarantee.
