Plumeria Page
Plumeria is a beautiful tropical plant that is related to the oleander plant. It can be found in most tropical areas, including Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, and many parts of Central America. The plant grows large, colorful flowers and is often grown and used in the state of Hawaii for leis. The plumeria has dark, glossy green leaves and a bright flower that can emit a poisonous sap. The flowers are quite fragrant, and are pollinated by moths, which continually move from plumeria plant to plumeria plant in search of nectar, although none exists with this species. There are currently over three hundred different named species of plumeria plants. These beautiful plants are now also grown in Asia, where they've become a popular choice of plant for gardens and resale.

Colors and Varieties
The plumeria plant is quite fragrant. It emits a sweet smell, which makes it a very appealing plant to grow and enjoy. Since there are over three hundred different types of plumeria species, it has quite a color spectrum. Colors of the plumeria flower can vary from different shades of pink and red, yellow, white, purple, and multi-colored. The flowers often grow from bushes or trees, so it can take several years for the trees to mature before flowers grow out of it. Once they do, however, the results are stunning. One plumeria tree can produce several dozen flowers or bunches of flowers. The stem of the plumeria plant stores moisture well, so they do not need frequent watering. This explains their ability to grow and thrive in tropical climates.

Growing
Plumeria can be grown from cuttings, as long as the proper growing procedures are followed. The cutting should be no shorter than 15 inches, and no longer than 18 to 20 inches in length. The soil for your plumeria should be well draining soil, and should have a 50/50 soil and sand ratio. Plain garden soil will not work well for plumeria. Let the cutting sit for about one week, and then plant the plumeria cutting about three inches into the soil and water thoroughly, allowing it to completely drain. It may take two years or more for the plant to grow flowers, but once it has established a good root system, it can be moved either outdoors or in a larger pot. Plumeria should never be over-watered, however in the colder months like December, it can be watered almost every day. In the more humid months like April through August, the plant can be watered less. The plumeria plant is very sensitive to frost and should be protected from it at all times. Cover the plant with plastic, or if it is smaller, bring it indoors during any danger of frost. Fertilizers containing phosphorous are great food for the plumeria plant, and they enjoy full sun for at least half of the day. Plumeria does best in the summer months, but can thrive during the fall and winter with proper care.
