Online Guide To Meteorology

Meteorology is one of the oldest sciences though it has changed a lot over the years. The name meteorology comes from the Greek phrase metereos , or “high in the sky,” and λογ?α , -logia, “to speak.” It is basically a study of the atmosphere that places special attention on weather processes and actually forecasting the weather. These weather processes include precipitation (drizzle, rain, snow, hail, ice pellets, etc), storms, thunderstorms, tornadoes, tsunamis, ice storms, fogs, tropical weather like dry and wet seasons, and even temperate climates or seasons like spring, summer, fall, and winter. These are just some of the subjects that are studied in meteorology because in order to predict when a storm will happen or what a season’s weather pattern will be, you have to understand why certain weather occurs. Then, you can look for similar patterns and predict when it will occur next. Studies in meteorology go back a long time but meteorology as known today didn’t start until around the 18 th century. The 19 th century saw huge breakthroughs in technology, specifically the computer, which greatly advanced the field of study. Today, meteorologists are able to accurately predict weather patterns all over the world, from small towns to entire countries including large storms like tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, and tsunamis. This way, they can warn people to get out of the way, saving thousands of lives every single year.
