Playhouse Safety
The safety of your children when playing on one of our wooden playhouses is paramount. As a conscientious manufacturer we strive to make all of our kids playhouses as safe to use as possible and all of our playhouses are safety tested and are BS EN71 safety tested and certified.
BS EN71 Safety Standard
The BS EN71 is the European Toy Standard Certificate of Conformity and is designed to test a child’s toy / product within Europe. Rigorous tests are made on toys and in our case our playhouses to make sure they are safe for use by the intended recipient, your children. Our playhouses must meet a range of specifications that are outlined in the BS EN71 testing process and if the wooden playhouses we manufacture do not pass the test they don’t get certificated and we cannot sell them.
The testing process makes sure that that our kids wooden playhouses are:
- Not toxic in any way to the user.
- Structurally sound and will not degrade and breakdown easily.
- Designed well.
- Not designed to inadvertently injure such as finger trapping.
What is Tested?
To adhere to the EN71 Standard there are a range of tests that our playhouses go through to make sure they are as safe for children to use as they can be. All of the points below are tested before certification can be made.
Styrene Glazing for Windows:
We use styrene for the glazing instead of glass as it is much safer to use. Styrene does not shatter and so there would be no dangerous shards to injure.
Round Edged Framing:
All of the framing of our playhouses have rounded edges so when they are touched, rubbed or knocked into they will not leave an edge that could possibly cut. There is less chance of splintering and splinter injuries. They also have a slight deflective quality to lessen any falling injury. A bonus to round edge framing is it reduces the amount of moisture that enters the wood.
Ventilation Holes:
All of the wooden playhouses have two circular holes cut into the plain gable to allow air to flow through the building to keep it ventilated so there is no chance of suffocation.
No Finger Trapping:
By using special blocks to assist in the attachment of the doors during construction you will create a 12mm gap that around the edge of the doors. There are also safety blocks that are attached to the Door Gable. Both of these measures stop the possibility of your child getting their fingers trapped when the doors of the wooden playhouses are fully opened.
Ladders, Slides and Railings:
All of our playhouse slides and playhouse ladders are tested for strength and angle of use to prevent injuring occurring during normal and appropriate use. The ladders and railings are also tested for grip and usability and to make sure that no child’s head or appendage can be trapped in the rungs.
Head Banging:
The wooden playhouses we manufacture are tested to make sure that there is little to no risk that a corner of the roof or other element of the building could cause serious injury to a child’s head when using the playhouse.
Supervision is Still Essential
Although we endeavour to design and create the safest playhouse possible, that still remains as fun and entertaining for children as we can, it is essential that every child who uses a wooden playhouse must be supervised at all times. Common sense has to be applied to the activities that are done within the playing environment of a playhouse and this is the responsibility of the parent, guardian or supervisor of the children that play in and around kids playhouses. Our playhouses should not be used by children under the age of 3 years.
